Reality TV Makes ‘Naked’ Bid For Ratings

Discovery Channel is baring it all for its new survival series.

Several other reality survival series have already tested participants’ ability to hunt and create shelter. Discovery chose to up the ante, dropping cast members into remote, wild locations–completely nude. The show is sure to test the limits of what the public will accept from reality shows.

“Naked and Afraid” will feature two complete strangers, one man and one woman, for 21 days as they attempt to survive and navigate their way to a predetermined extraction point, one to 10 miles from their drop-off location. Each episode features a different couple in a different location and will premiere June 23.

As part of the show, the survivalists’ are allowed one personal item of their choosing. They are also given a “rudimentary map” and Go Pro cameras, “which were rolling at all times,” according to Denise Contis, an executive producer on the show.

While navigating the terrain of the Maldives, Panama and Boreo may have been a first time experience for the participants, all of whom classify themselves as “survivalists,” nudity is no longer uncharted water for the network.

“Naked Castaway,” which premiered in April, featured explorer Ed Stafford as he survived for 60 days sans food, clothing or tools on a deserted Fijian island.

“We wanted scenarios that are so real they are unreal,” said Contis, referring to the premise of “Naked and Afraid.”

The cable network, which has produced such documentaries as “Planet Earth” and “Africa” and built their non-fiction programming with “Shark Week,” has increasingly turned from documentaries to the unscripted reality genre to attract new viewers.

“We are telling a magnetic story with compelling characters and a vicarious exploration,” said Contis. “’Naked and Afraid’ touches all or a lot of the key components to our programming.”

In addition to the survivalists’ camera footage, a four-person crew tracked and shot the couple at all times. Once a day everyday, producers would collect the memory cards from the participants’ cameras and check the batteries.

The crew got involved on more than one occasion, when people were depleted or in an emergency situation. But Contis said she does not believe that interfered with the overall show. “There is no manipulation, no element of scripted reality,” she said.

When asked about the potential dangers for the participants, Contis said, “I don’t know that they were very clearly in danger. They were placed in this location, where and how they survived and if they traveled at all, that was up to them.”

[More from WSJ.com: How the Stories on ‘The Newsroom’ Were Chosen]

Executive producer Steven Rankin was bitten by a Fer-de-lance snake during filming and nearly lost his foot in Costa Rica. He later tweeted a gruesome photo of his injury.

Contis also denied that Discovery was aiming for any shock value. “It’s the ultimate survival show. Neither of them have clothes and by the time they are on the ground it is a complete non-issue.”

From a production standpoint, Contis also said that the show was not shot any differently due to the participants’ nudity, and that certain areas would be blurred out for broadcast.

The show went through a 10-month pre-production development period, where locations were scouted and the participants were chosen.

Discovery Channel, part of Discovery Communications, is distributed to 100 million homes in the U.S. and over 180 countries.

London Premiere of 'World War Z'

It was natural — albeit fairly rare — for Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie to bring their two sons Maddox and Pax to the world premiere of their dad's giant new summer movie "World War Z," because he made the movie just for them. Pitt said at the CinemaCon convention back in April that he had been looking for a film project especially suited to their tastes. The Daily Mail quoted Pitt as saying, "I just wanted to do a film that my boys could see before they turned 18 – one that they would like, anyways. And they love a zombie."

11-year-old Maddox and Pax, 9 — who previously only attended premieres for kid-friendly flicks like "Shark Tales" and "Kung Fu Panda 2" (though Maddox also accompanied his parents to the inspirational "Invictus") — may be considered a bit young for the PG-13 action movie, which features hordes of rampaging zombies (in the U.K. where they saw it the movie is recommended for audiences age 15 and up). But at least they already know that Pitt makes it through the movie okay.

Right before showtime, the boys looked ready for the action when they posed for a quick photo inside the Empire Cinema with their famous parents. Pax was dressed in all black — just like his mom and dad. Meanwhile, Maddox looked pretty spiffy rocking a gray blazer and casually dangling his shades from the neck of his shirt. However, he also had on gray hat … perhaps to pull down over his eyes in case "WWZ" got too scary.

Matt Smith set to leave Doctor Who

Matt Smith is leaving Doctor Who and will bow out in the Christmas special when he will be replaced by a new incarnation of the time lord.

Smith, who has been in the role since 2010, said it had been "an honour" to play the part.
He said: "Doctor Who has been the most brilliant experience for me as an actor and a bloke, and that largely is down to the cast, crew and fans of the show.
"I'm incredibly grateful to all the cast and crew who work tirelessly every day, to realise all the elements of the show and deliver Doctor Who to the audience. Many of them have become good friends and I'm incredibly proud of what we have achieved over the last four years."
He also paid tribute to show supremo Steven Moffat whose "varied, funny, mind bending and brilliant scripts has been one of the greatest and most rewarding challenges of my career".
He said: "It's been a privilege and a treat to work with Steven, he's a good friend and will continue to shape a brilliant world for the Doctor. The fans of Doctor Who around the world are unlike any other; they dress up, shout louder, know more about the history of the show (and speculate more about the future of the show) in a way that I've never seen before, your dedication is truly remarkable.
"Thank you so very much for supporting my incarnation of the Time Lord, number Eleven, who I might add is not done yet, I'm back for the 50th anniversary and the Christmas special."
Smith, who recently made his directorial debut, has spoken about ambitions for a film-making career. The search is on for a replacement but no-one has signed up for the role yet. Smith's most recent on-screen companion, played by Jenna-Louise Coleman, will stay with the show.
Moffat said: "Every day, on every episode, in every set of rushes, Matt Smith surprised me: the way he'd turn a line, or spin on his heels, or make something funny, or out of nowhere make me cry, I just never knew what was coming next.
"The Doctor can be clown and hero, often at the same time, and Matt rose to both challenges magnificently. And even better than that, given the pressures of this extraordinary show, he is one of the nicest and hardest-working people I have ever had the privilege of knowing."

Fashion goes bizarre: Gold-plated mouthpieces and spikey headpieces steal the show on Royal College of Art catwalk

Royal College of Art Graduate Fashion Show: Young designers Lucie Vincini and Maiko Takeda shock with their bizarre collections.

A trip to the dentist is something most of us dread, so we wouldn't be surprised to hear winces coming from the FROW crowd at the Royal College of Art Graduate fashion show.

Models hit the catwalk for menswear designer Lucie Vincini yesterday wearing menacing gold-plated mouth guards which bared their teeth, with a huge gold ring hanging over their chins.
In scenes that would make anyone fearful of the dentist quiver in their seats, the mouthpiece caused
a stir among the audience - as the models showcased a series of weird and wonderful outfits.

From diamante-studded skull caps, to label-baring baggy shirts and tartan suits, the fledging designer's final collection made for eye-catching viewing as it was shown on the catwalk in Kensington, west London.

Key trends were clearly designed to shock, with the young designer showcasing a triple denim look and a huge white duvet coat, complete with tiered silk panelling down the sides.

Naturally, Vincini's collection wasn't the only one to turn heads during the show though - as Batman-style beanie hats, patchwork-fur jodhpurs and duvet-like jackets also hit the runway.

[George launch Graduate Fashion Week collection, see the details]

Fashion designer Maiko Takeda was another young graduate whose collection went down a storm with the audience, with her creature-like designs playing with geometric shapes and structures.

One model appeared to be wearing a furry caterpillar across her eyes, as she hit the runway with a spiky, perspex creation across her eyes.

With just enough clear plastic over her eyes allowing her to see, the model's eyewear graduated in colour that created a thickening effect.

Another model sheer's dress was teamed with one arm made entirely of spikes, which wrapped around the entire top half of the dress.

[Topshop heiress Chloe Green launches her latest collection]

But it was the headpieces at Takeda's show that really caused gasps from the audience, as models managed to avoid tripping down the catwalk in their huge face-covering creations.

Despite the spiky colourful pieces covering models' eyes, there wasn't a mishap in sight as they hit the runway in the looks.

Instead, the FROW crowd were wowed by the spiked headpieces, which flaunted the designer's love of geometric shapes, which are said to be inspired by environmental influences.

Despite all the hype, soccer stud Cristiano Ronaldo really does measure up.

Even though he already looks like a perfectly sculpted plastic sculpture, the 28-year-old Portuguese futbol sensation showed off his entirely hairless, buff bod by rolling up his shorts and going shirtless in order to get properly fitted for his latest waxen statue in Madrid on Thursday.

We're told the human Ken doll has an amazing 43 inch chest, a beautiful 33 inch waist, a pair of glorious 24.3 inch thighs, heavenly 13 inch (unflexed) upper arms and a rock hard 11.8 inch ... forearm.

Size does matter.

Disney Sued for Billions Over 'Pirates of the Caribbean' Films-by Eriq Gardner

Author Royce Mathew takes credit for pirates transforming into living skeletons under the moonlight -- and says the studio fooled him during a lawsuit last decade.

Royce Mathew, a Florida-based author of supernatural adventure stories, is looking to shine the light on alleged pirating going on at The Walt Disney Company.

He's filed a copyright infringement lawsuit (read the complaint here) that alleges that his work was taken for the lucrative Pirates of the Caribbean films. To succeed in his goal of extracting billions of dollars for the claimed infringements, Mathew will not only have to pass the tough legal test of demonstrating that the movies were substantially similar to his own work, but also that he has brought a timely lawsuit that isn't barred by a previous settlement agreement he made with Disney.
This isn't, after all, the first time that Mathew has sued.
About a decade ago, after seeing the first film that starred Johnny Depp, Mathew began contacting various lawyers and took an advertisement out in Variety looking for someone to represent him. Without much success, Mathew filed a lawsuit against Disney in 2005 on his own behalf. Eventually, Mathew was able to retain an attorney, and during the initial case, Mathew and Disney are said to have engaged in the discovery process with each other.
STORY: Disney Announces Release Dates for Pixar and Animated Films Through 2018
Mathew says he provided evidence that his work was taken. In turn, Disney maintained that Pirates of the Caribbean was "independently created," which if true, meant that Mathew had no shot at prevailing on his copyright claim.
In particular, Mathew's new lawsuit says that Disney affirmatively represented that it had independently created "the unique supernatural elements in the POC Movie Franchise that involves pirates transforming and turning into living skeletons under the moonlight due to a hideous curse affecting them."
During the initial lawsuit, Disney published a book about the transformation of a theme park ride to a hit movie and credited theme park artist Marc Davis with some of the essential elements. Disney produced some of Davis' "never-before-published" theme park artwork in discovery.
Mathew says he relied upon this representation, as well as the depositions of others at Disney, in backing off from his copyright claims in 2007 and signing a release form.
Now, six years later, Mathew is again suing, saying that Disney "used false and fraudulent evidence to procure a settlement." As evidence for this, the plaintiff points to a book that was later published in 2009 that allegedly depicted the same scene from Davis' art, this time attributed to another artist named Collin Campbell. The published work also is said to be evidence that Disney had "altered and tampered" with the artwork for the purpose of creating the illusion that it had independently created the element of pirates transforming into living skeletons under the moonlight.
Whether or not that's true, Mathew figures to have to show that his own work was protectable expression -- rather than just an idea -- and that Disney created something substantially similar. But first, Mathew will probably have to convince a judge that his claims aren't barred by the statute of limitations and also that his claims aren't precluded by any release form he signed back in 2007.
On the latter point, his new attorney Michael Wolk anticipates such an obstacle, saying in the lawsuit that because the release agreement was "fraudulently procured," it necessitates rescission, and that "even if the Fraudulently Procured Release Agreement is not rescinded, then the Plaintiff still retains, and the Plaintiff is entitled to enforce, his independently viable copyright infringement claims against the Defendants based upon conduct taking place after May-June 2007."
He's suing Disney, Buena Vista, Jerry Bruckheimer and others involved in the film.
Disney has yet to comment.

After Earth: Film Review

The Bottom Line

The disappointing sci-fi survival tale does little with its substantial resources.

Opens

Friday, May 31 (Sony Pictures)

Cast

Jaden Smith, Will Smith, Sophie Okonedo, Zoe Isabella Kravitz

Will and Jaden Smith play a father and son marooned on a long-uninhabited Earth.

Humanity's home planet hardly merits the name-check in After Earth, M. Night Shyamalan's sci-fi survival tale whose shipwreck action could (with the exception of a scene where our hero scrawls a crude map over Lascaux-like cave paintings) take place on any old life-supporting globe in the cosmos. The disappointingly generic film, which strands a father and son (Will and Jaden Smith) on Earth a thousand years after a planet-wide evacuation, will leave genre audiences pining for the more Terra-centric conceits of Oblivion, not to mention countless other future-set films that find novelty in making familiar surroundings threatening. Will Smith's presence, not just as costar but as originator of the story, seems likely to carry box office receipts beyond the benchmark of Shyamalan's previous picture, the wretched The Last Airbender, but those hoping for a franchise should navigate elsewhere.

Steven Spielberg Calls Robert DeNiro for Advice

Robert DeNiro ran the Cannes Film Festival jury in 2011. He told me that when Steven Spielberg was named the head of this year’s jury, the “Lincoln” director called him for advice. “I told him, Have fun with it. It’s hard work but he’ll enjoy it.”
DeNiro also says Spielberg will not be able to screen the movies on his yacht anchored off of Cannes that resembles a floating country. “You have to be in the theaters,” said DeNiro, who as a constant and genial presence in 2011 all over the Croisette. “He can’t watch them on a boat.”
Spielberg has chosen an all star jury to help him cast ballots this year. Among his choices: Oscar winner Nicole Kidman and two time Best Director Ang Lee, as well as two time winner actor Christoph Waltz. The jury is as well known this year as the stars in the movies say some wags.
But in reality, Cannes is going to be jam packed with stars and parties for movies. Forget about the Paris Hilton type events that have nothing to do with the festival. Cannes is so busy that those tabloid celeb gatherings don’t really register. It’s not that Cannes isn’t fun. But it is about real stars and real movies, not sideshows.
To wit: movies by the Alexander Payne, Sofia Coppola, Joel and Ethan Coen, James Franco, James Toback are tops on the lists. Hollywood legends Jane Fonda, Robert Redford, Jerry Lewis and Kim Novak are all coming to town. Petra Nemcova is hosting a fund raiser for Haiti. Amy Sacco is bringing Bungalow 8 to a yacht. Denise Rich is hosting an all star party for Toback’s “Seduced and Abandoned.”
Popular publisher and p.r. consultant Charles Finch is throwing his annual dinner for the A list at the Hotel du Cap’s Eden Roc– plus he’s behind the New York Film Festival’s new filmmaker venture with Jaeger LeCoultre now under way. Naomi Campbell has her famous fashion show. And the very in the know crowds will be buzzing around Antibes hot spots Michelangelo, Tetou, and Bacon, as per usual.

Action star, comedian and martial arts master Jackie Chan will be the special guest at “An Academy Salute to Jackie Chan,” featuring a screening of “Police Story III – Supercop.”
Hosted by Entertainment Weekly’s Geoff Boucher, Chan will participate in an onstage conversation before the screening of the 1992 action movie, which co-stars Michelle Yeoh, on Monday, June 3, at 7:30 p.m. at the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills.

The Academy’s summer of kung fu continues with a salute to this renowned martial arts master, action star and comedian. With over 100 film appearances, and through his frequent work as a producer, director and writer, Jackie Chan has become a global phenomenon, all the while performing his own incredible stunts.
Born in Hong Kong, Jackie Chan studied martial arts, acting, acrobatics and singing at the China Drama Academy, which was a training ground for the famed Peking Opera. He made his film debut at the age of 8, in 1962’s “Big and Little Wong Tin Bar,” and made several other film appearances with his schoolmates (including Sammo Hung) during his childhood.
Chan worked as a stuntman while still a teen, progressing to leading man roles in the early 1970s and breaking through as an international star in 1978 with “Drunken Master.” While continuing to star in Hong Kong-made productions, Chan began appearing in films in the U.S. and followed his first big North American success, “Rumble in the Bronx” (1995), with the popular “Rush Hour” and “Shanghai” films, and the 2010 remake of “The Karate Kid.”
In “Police Story III – Supercop,” Chan again takes up the mantle of a tough-minded Hong Kong police detective, who this time partners with a female officer (Michelle Yeoh) to take down a drug syndicate in Mainland China. With the support of his now-legendary stunt team, Chan pulls off some of his most awesome stunts ever, including a daredevil leap from the roof of a tall building to a rope ladder being trailed by a hovering helicopter. The Academy Film Archive’s print is the original Hong Kong version, subtitled in English, which was first shown in the U.S. in 1992.

British Teen Sells App To Yahoo
For $30m

Nick D’Aloisio, 17, High School Student; to now have an office at Yahoo and school during evenings,
There isn’t so strong a line between being an everyday guy and becoming one of the world’s youngest millionaires; you gotta sell that unique thing you have, and boom! you are all over the news.
Meet Nick D’Aloisio, the 17-year-old British entrepreneur who just sold his popular news-reading app to Yahoo Inc. for close to $30 million, instantly becoming one of the world’s youngest self-made millionaires.
It’s the classic Silicon Valley success story of a young software prodigy striking it ridiculously and improbably big.
D’Aloisio, who taught himself to write software at age 12, built the free iPhone app Summly — which automatically summarizes news stories for small screens ‑ in his London bedroom in 2011. He was just 15 years old. Soon he had backing from Horizons Ventures, the venture capital arm of Hong Kong billionaire Li Ka-shing and big names such as Zynga Inc.’s Mark Pincus and actor Ashton Kutcher.
Before it was pulled from the app store Monday after the announcement of the Yahoo deal, D’Aloisio’s app Summly had been downloaded nearly 1 million times. It had deals with 250 online publishers, including News Corp., and 10 employees in London. Not bad for a high school student.
To me, Yahoo is the best company to be joining right now because it’s one of these classic Internet companies,” D’Aloisio said in an interview. “With new leadership from Marissa Mayer, Yahoo has a strong focus on mobile and product, and that’s the perfect fit for Summly.”
Mayer, the former Google Inc. executive who took over the Sunnyvale, California company last summer, has focused on mobile technology to revive Yahoo’s lagging fortunes. She has snapped up a number of promising mobile start-ups as much for their personnel as for the innovation.
In D’Aloisio, Yahoo is getting someone who truly thinks and lives in the mobile world. Rather than browsing the Web by clicking a mouse, more people are connecting to the Internet with their smartphone or tablet, changing what kind and how much information they consume, Yahoo mobile chief Adam Cahan said.
Silicon Valley companies such as Facebook and Yahoo are looking to adapt their Internet businesses to hold on to consumers who want easier, faster ways to find what matters to them.
“Summly solves this by delivering snapshots of stories, giving you a simple and elegant way to find the news you want, faster than ever before,” Cahan said.
D’Aloisio, who took a break from school for six months to focus full time on Summly, will join Yahoo’s London office while continuing his studies in the evenings and living at home with his parents. He says Yahoo plans to integrate Summly into all sorts of mobile experiences.
“The real idea is to take the core of the technology and find different fits for it and make it as ubiquitous as possible on the Web,” he said.
“We want to take summarisation and build beautiful content experiences around it.” He says his parents — his dad is an energy financier, his mother is a lawyer — will help him manage the financial windfall (he says all he wants is a new computer and pair of Nike trainers). But he says he was not driven to the deal by dollar signs.
“Technology has really been the driver behind this whole deal,” D’Aloisio said. “I can’t wait to see how it plays out at Yahoo.”
D’Aloisio is just one of a number of under-21 entrepreneurs who have made millions at a very young age. Patrick Collison, who took his first computer class at age 8 and entered young scientist competitions as a teen in Ireland, was just 19 when he and his brother John sold their Silicon Valley start-up Auctomatic to Canadian company Live Current Media Inc., a deal that made them overnight millionaires.
“It was helpful perspective to have something like that happen very early on,” said Collison, who is now co-founder and chief executive of San Francisco payments start-up Stripe.
“It shows you that it’s not all that big a deal. Yes, it’s wonderful to create something that someone is interested in acquiring, and it’s nice to have more money than you had before, but really nothing changes. Enjoying what you do on a day-to-day basis is what’s important.”
The sudden flash of worldwide media attention has been a bit overwhelming, D’Aloisio said. But not in a bad way. “It’s been an absolutely awesome experience,” D’Aloisio said. “I’d love to do it again someday with another company.” Spoken like a true entrepreneur. [LA Times]

Kris Humphries recently said he's not to blame for Kim Kardashian's miscarriage scare. Now his family is speaking out, calling their union a "sham."
In an interview with The Sun (UK), Kris' uncle Mike and aunt Dedria open up about the 28-year-old NBA player's relationship with the E! starlet.
Simply put, “It was all a sham," Dedria told the newspaper.
  • Kris Humphries is a Tool
  • Kim Kardashian Klose Up
"My understanding of marriage is that people give it more than 72 days unless there’s abuse. If somebody had duped me and used me in front of the whole world, I would be very angry."
As for why Kris Humphries is still fighting for an annulment as opposed to just getting divorced, she says, "An annulment says it wasn’t valid in the first place."
"She should admit that it was a sham at the very least."

Mike added that Kris wants more than just a clean slate.
“I can just see him wanting a pound of flesh back. I believe he wants payback," he said, adding that Kim's mom, Kris Jenner, is behind the facade.
“She’s the mastermind. You can just see that’s the brains making that thing go. The wicked part is she’s using her family. All of this is really due to her.”
Kris and Kim, who split in the fall of 2011 (yes, 2011), are set for a May 6 divorce trial; the Brooklyn Nets star wants an annulment on the grounds of fraud.
Whether he has a case remains to be seen, but his former attorney allegedly quit because he doesn't think there is enough evidence to back the claim.
Kim Kardashian, how pregnant with Kanye West's baby, is still pissed about the charade, though, which is probably half the battle as far as Kris is concerned.
